MODERN APPRENTICESHIP
INFORMATION
JOB DESCRIPTION
Modern Apprenticeships in child care offer young people the
opportunity to be employed full time in a nursery while undertaking
a Scottish Vocational Qualification level III in Children’s
Care, Learning and Development (CCLD).
No experience is necessary, as full training will be given by
both nursery and Carousel Training Centre.
If you are not already employed by a nursery then we have a marketing
team who can assist you in sourcing employment in order for you
to start your training.
As an apprentice you will be expected to work as part of a team
to provide a programme of activities for children as young as
babies to 5 years old.
You will help the children learn and develop their physical,
intellectual, language and social skills through organised play.
You will care for them whilst away from their family, giving support
where required. Other duties will include feeding, caring, developing
and planning of activities. Domestic duties are required to ensure
a safe environment for the children.
You should be highly motivated and have good communication skills.
Your employer would expect you to work an average working week
of 35 - 40 hours per week. Your hours would be decided by the
nursery.
The nursery, as your employer, is responsible for setting the rate of
pay for your apprentice position.
Working with children is very rewarding, and can lead to a good
career in childcare!

TRAINING
In order to be considered for training in CCLD, you will need
to have, or expect to gain, 3 standard grades at bands 1-3, one
of which must include English, or equivalent intermediate grades.
You would be working towards an SVQ Level III in Children’s
Care, Learning and Development. In addition you will learn
Core Skills such as Communication, Working with Others, Numeracy
and IT. You will attend a workshop class for your theory and
underpinning knowledge 1 day every 4 weeks. Classes will be
held in either our Glasgow or Edinburgh offices. Your assessor
will visit your workplace to observe and assess your practical
competence. Your portfolio of written evidence will demonstrate
your good practise and will consist of reflective accounts,
knowledge tasks and questions.
To receive a funded training place you must be 16-19 years old.
It can take 20 – 24 months to complete the course.

GRADUATION
All candidates who complete the Modern Apprenticeship qualification
in Children’s Care, Learning and Development are invited to attend
a Graduation Ceremony with family and friends to celebrate their
achievement.
Modern Apprenticeship qualifications are highly regarded throughout
the industry and this is supported by the attendance of the Senior
Moderator from Scottish Qualifications Authority who is responsible
for bestowing the honour on each graduate as they are called to
the stage to receive their award.
Guest speakers from Skills Development Scotland and nurseries
participating in apprenticeships are also in attendance and they
speak of the importance of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme as
a whole in providing a springboard into the job market as a qualified
child care worker.
Photographers are on hand to record the occasion and refreshments
are provided after the ceremony.
