MODERN APPRENTICESHIP INFORMATION
A Modern Apprentice Childcare Worker will be employed in a nursery,
and be expected to work as part of a team to provide a quality programme
of activities for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. You will help children
develop physical, intellectual, language and social skills through play.
You will work in partnership with parents and nursery staff.
You must have, or expect to gain, 3 standard grades at bands 1-3,
one of which must be in English. You must have excellent interpersonal
skills and be highly motivated and have the ability to work as part of a
team. You should also be a good communicator and be of smart
appearance.
You will be trained on the job to SVQ Level III in Children’s Care,
Learning and Development. In addition you will learn Core Skills such as
Communication and Working with Others. You will attend a workshop for your
theory and underpinning knowledge 1 day every 4 weeks and your assessor
will visit your workplace to observe and assess your practical
competence.
The average working week is 35 - 40 hours per week (hours to be
decided by nursery). You will be paid approximately £85 per week (will
vary depending on nursery).
You must be 16 – 19 years old.

Babies As a Modern Apprentice you will be
involved in the care of babies. It is important that you welcome
babies into a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where the emphasis is on
creating a caring yet stimulating environment. You will learn about
babies’ physical and emotional development and be involved with
their care on a day to day basis. |

2 – 3
Years In the 2-3 years playroom the children are mobile
and beginning to discover the world around them. You will be
involved in providing a pleasant and secure foundation for the
development of the children’s social and intellectual skills.

3 – 5
Years In the 3-5 years department the children are now
playing independently. You will be involved in planning appropriate
activities to develop children’s awareness and understanding of the
world around them. You will learn to plan, implement and evaluate a
pre-school curriculum. |
